Life-history features of the sympatric amphipods Themisto pacifica and T. japonica in the western North Pacific were analyzed based on seasonal field samples collected from July 1996 through July 1998, and data from laboratory rearing experiments. T. pacfica occurred throughout the year, with populations peaking from spring to summer. In contrast, T. japonica were rare from autumn to early winter, but became abundant in late winter to spring. Mature T. pacifica females and juveniles occurred together throughout the year, indicating year-round reproduction. Mature T. japonica females were observed only in spring, and juveniles occurred irregularly in small numbers, suggesting limited, early-spring reproduction in this study area. Size composition analysis of T. pacifica identified a total of eight cohorts over the 2 years of the study. Due to the smaller sample size and rarity of mature females (>9.6 mm) and males (>7.1 mm), cohort analyses of T. japonica were not comparable. Laboratory rearing of specimens at 2°C, 5°C, 8°C and 12°C revealed that a linear equation best expressed body length growth by T. pacifica, while a logistic equation best expressed body length growth by T. japoncia. Combining these laboratory-derived growth patterns with maturity sizes of wild specimens, the minimum and maximum generation times of females at a temperature range of 2–12°C were computed as 32 days (12°C) and 224 days (2°C), respectively, for T. pacifica, and 66 days (12°C) and 358 days (2°C), respectively, for T. japonica. The numbers of eggs or juveniles in females marsupia increased with female body length and ranged from 23 to 64 for T. pacifica and from 152 to 601 for T. japonica. Taking into account the number of mature female instars, lifetime fecundities were estimated as 342 eggs for T. pacifica and 1195 eggs for T. japonica. Possible mechanisms for the coexistence of these two amphipods in the Oyashio region are also discussed.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Forty-three female Euphausia superba were collected from three sites in Prydz Bay, Antarctica in January 1985. Most gravid females took 3 to 14 d to spawn after capture and some less mature females released eggs after 21 d. Most females spawned only once; overall mean brood size was 2 809 eggs and mean hatchability for eggs from the premoult females was 69.7%. For seven females spawning a second time, overall mean brood size was 597 eggs. Mean hatchability for second-spawn eggs from five premoult females was 67.1%. Possible origins of the second-spawned eggs were small numbers of matured eggs left in the ovaries after the first spawning or eggs developed from those of peripheral nucleolus and vitellogenic stages. Throughout the 8 wk of observations, there was no apparent development of eggs in females which had released all their eggs at one spawning.  相似文献

The metabolic rates (oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion, phosphate excretion) of epipelagic marine zooplankton have been expressed as a function of body mass (dry, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus weights) and habitat temperature, using the multiple-regression method. Zooplankton data used for this analysis are from phylogenetically mixed groups (56 to 143 species, representing 7 to 8 phyla, body mass range: 6 orders of magnitude) from various latitudes (habitat temperature range:-1.4° to 30°C). The results revealed that 84 to 96% of variation in metabolic rates is due to body mass and habitat temperature. Among the various body-mass units, the best correlation was provided by carbon and nitrogen units for all three metabolic rates. Oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion are all similar in terms of body-mass effect, but differ in terms of temperature effect. With carbon or nitrogen body-mass units, calculated Q10 values are 1.82 to 1.89 for oxygen uptake, 1.91 to 1.93 for ammonia excretion and 1.55 for phosphate excretion. The effects of body mass and habitat temperature on the metabolic quotients (O:N, N:P, O:P) are insignificant. The present results for oxygen-uptake rate vs body mass do not differ significantly from those reported for general poikilotherms by Hemmingsen and for crustaceans by Ivleva at a comparable temperature (20°C). The importance of a body-mass measure for meaningful comparison is suggested by the evaluation of the habitat-temperature effect between mixed taxonomic groups and selected ones. Considering the dominant effects of body mass and temperature on zooplankton metabolic rates, the latitudinal gradient of community metabolic rate for net zooplankton in the ocean is estimated, emphasizing the non-parallelism between community metabolic rates and the standing stock of net zooplankton.  相似文献

The vertical distribution, abundance and community structure of oncaeid copepods were investigated in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific. Samples were collected with a 0.10 mm mesh closing type net from five discrete layers down to a maximum depth of 2,000 m in September and December 1996 and in April and October 1997. The copepods were widely distributed from epipelagic to bathypelagic zones, and showed prominent peaks of abundance above the thermocline and/or between 250 and 1,000 m depth. Standing stocks of total oncaeid copepods ranged from 1.5 to 2.5×105 inds m–2 at 0–2,000 m in the water column, which are the same order of magnitudes as those reported in tropical, subtropical and polar regions by previous workers. A total of 38 species and two forms belonging to the genera Oncaea, Triconia, Spinoncaea, Conaea and Epicalymma, and two provisionally classified species of the family Oncaeidae were identified in this study. Of these, 14 species have already been recorded from the eastern subarctic Pacific. Several warm-water species were also found in December 1996 and/or October 1997, when the effect of warm-core rings originating from the Kuroshio Current was evident in the epipelagic zone. Dominant species throughout the whole water column were T. borealis, T. canadensis, O. grossa, O. parila, O. rimula, O. lacinia, Epicalymma spp. and Oncaea sp. A, and these eight species together always made up about half of the total oncaeid numbers. Community analysis revealed that species composition in epipelagic and upper mesopelagic zones varied temporally due to the changes of hydrographic conditions, whereas those in lower mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones were relatively stable, reflecting the constancy of deep environments.Communicated by O. Home medical care (HMC) is advancing not only in Japan but also throughout the world. In Japan, HMC waste is legally classified as municipal waste. Nevertheless, some municipalities do not collect some or all the HMC waste because of fear of infection. Therefore, this study was conducted to clarify the following two issues: First, have the municipalities made progress in collecting and appropriate disposal of HMC waste in the past 13 years? Second, is there a difference between a large city and a small city in terms of appropriate disposal progress? A total of 687 municipalities published the treatment of HMC waste. Currently, 42 municipalities collected all HMC waste. 236 municipalities were collecting HMC waste except for self-injection needle. 117 municipalities were collecting HMC waste except for self-injection needle and Syringe. The collection status of HMC waste was better in cities with high population than in cities with low population. HMC waste collection status was progressed over 13 years. However, more than 60% of the municipality staff stated that they could not avoid being anxious about infection caused by HMC waste. We suggest that providing HMC waste education to the municipalities wherein these efforts have not yet progressed is important.

For thirteen representative taxa of metazooplankton from various depth horizons (<4,200 m) of the world’s oceans, respiration rate (681 datasets on 390 species) and ammonia excretion rate (266 datasets on 190 species) are compiled and analyzed as a function of body mass (dry mass, carbon or nitrogen), habitat temperature, habitat depth and taxon. Stepwise-regression analyses reveal that body mass is the most important parameter, followed by habitat temperature and habitat depth, whereas taxon is of lesser importance for both rates. The resultant multiple regression equations show that both respiration rate and ammonia excretion rate (per individual) increase with increase in body mass and habitat temperature, but decrease with habitat depth. Some taxa are characterized by significantly higher or lower rates of respiration or ammonia excretion than the others. Overall, the global-bathymetric models explain 93.4–94.2 % of the variance of respiration data and 80.8–89.7 % of the variance of ammonia excretion data. The atomic O:N ratios (respiration/ammonia excretion) are largely independent of body mass, habitat temperature, habitat depth and taxon, with a median of 17.8. The present results are discussed in light of the methodological constraints and the standing hypotheses for the relationship between metabolic rate and temperature. Perspectives for model improvement and possible application of it to plankton-imaging systems for rapid assessment of the role of metazooplankton in C or N cycles in the pelagic ecosystem are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Respiration and ammonia excretion rates of 19–24 euphausiids from the epipelagic through bathypelagic zones of the world’s oceans were compiled. Body mass (expressed in terms of dry mass, carbon or nitrogen), habitat temperature and sampling depth were designated as parameters in multiple regression analysis. Results suggested that the three parameters were highly significant, contributing 71–89 % of the variance in respiration rates and 69–81 % of the variance in ammonia excretion rates. Atomic O:N ratios derived from simultaneous measurements of respiration and ammonia excretion rates ranged from 11 to 90 (median: 27), and no appreciable effects of the three parameters on O:N ratios were detected. If global-bathymetric models for the metabolism and chemical composition of copepods and chaetognaths are compared with those of euphausiids, it becomes evident that euphausiids are unique in that they maintain high metabolic rates and accumulate moderate amounts of energy reserves (lipids).  相似文献

Karyotypes of the brackish-water polychaeteNeanthes japonica (Izuka) collected from five rivers in Japan from 1984 to 1988 were examined with air-drying and flame-drying methods using materials consisting of regenerating tails, clumps of spermatogonia and youngN. japonica specimens (embryos, larvae or juveniles). A diploid number of 28 was determined in well-spread metaphase chromosomes of mitotic cells. The presence of an XX-XY (male heterogametic) sex chromosome system was established for the first time in polychaetes. The Y chromosome was larger than the X chromosome. Slight differences in karyotype were found between two forms (the small- and large-egg forms), which are very similar in adult morphology but can be distinguished by reproductive and developmental characteristics.  相似文献

We studied the processes of gonadal maturation, spawning, fertilization and embryonic development of the giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai, which has been blooming in recent years in the Sea of Japan. Healthy medusae actively swimming offshore had immature gonads, but damaged and ashore-drifted animals had relatively mature gonads. The animals maintained in a small net on the nearshore to mimic the drifted condition showed induced gonadal maturation by the increase in oocyte diameter and darkness in the matrix. A similar maturation process also occurred in isolated pieces of ovary incubated at the same temperature. Fully grown oocytes that probably stopped at the prophase of the first meiosis reinitiated maturation divisions in response to light exposure, and massive spawnings occurred 80–100 min after the exposure. The spawned oocytes were first released within the subgenital sinus, then transported peripherally and finally shed into the gastrovascular cavity. Maturation and spawning in male gonads were similar to those of females except that the male spawning occurred within 30 min after the light exposure and always preceded the female spawning. Hence, it was suggested that fertilization might take place in the female gastrovascular cavity by the sperm that came in from surrounding seawater by animals’ pumping activities after dawn. Having mechanical damages might promote fertilization success of this species in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

The hepatopancreatic extracts of Euphausia superba Dana and E. crystallorophias Holt and Tattersall collected from the Antarctic. Ocean during January 1985, are most effective in hydrolysing substrates containing (13)--glucosidic linkages. Three enzymes appear to be involved in the depolymerization of (13)--D-glucans in the euphausiid diet: (1) an exo-(13)--D-glucanase, (2) an endo-(13)--D-glucanase and (3) a -D-glucosidase. The glucanases have a pH optimum of 5.4, a temperature optimum of 50°C and are optimally extracted in bistripropane buffer, pH 7.2. Levels of (13)-D-glucanase in laboratory-cultured E. superba are inversely affected by food availability, and activities double after starvation for 12 d. The increase is due mainly to higher activities of exo-acting glucanases. -Amylase and endo-(14)--D-glucanase (cellulase) activity are also present in the extracts in addition to glycosidase activity against a range of p-nitrophenyl substrates (-and -D-glocose, - and -D-galactose, -D-xylose, - and -D-mannose). Digestive activity against several acidic polysaccharides, including the acidic mucilage polysaccharide of the ice diatom Stauroneis amphioxys, is minimal and is not induced when the polysaccharide is present in the diet of E. superba. These results indicate that some, but not all, components of the algal material in the euphausiid diet can be hydrolyzed and assimilated.  相似文献
